Shouldn't Japanese amateur sports be consistent about import athletes? Why is OK for foreign distance runners to compete for Japanese high school track clubs, but yet as far as I know you have to be Japanese to play HS baseball? If a Kenyan guy can run in the Hakone Eguyen, shouldn't a guy from the Dominican Republic be allowed to pitch at Koshien? I'm just asking for consistency from sport to sport. |
In the world of Japanese sports, there isn't any consistancy. Baseball leagues, sumo and several sports have caps on the number of gaijin that can compete. It is sad, really.
Yes, sports, amateur and professional, should allow foreign athletes to compete. It should be fair. Everyone should be able to participate. Unfortunately, that just isn't the case. |
Help with a short English to Japanese Romaji translation? My friend asked me what "flames of woe" would be in Japanese since I'm an amateur with the language. I know flame is honoo and I know kanashimi is the word akin to woe so I told him "kanashimi no honoo". Is this right? It's not really something I could look up to double check. |
Kanashimi means sadness.
Woe is.... grief, sorrow, misery...
If your "woe" there is really "sadness," then I'm pretty sure you're correct. |
Looking for a good Japanese dish (Lunch or dinner) that an Amateur cook can make without much difficulty.? I have some experience in a kitchen but my skills are a bit rusty. I have never made any Japanese dishes before and am looking for something fun to try that will feed 3-5 people. Any thoughts? |
You might have to double or triple the quantities, but these look awfully good and they also look fairly easy:

When did you first know you were hooked on Japanese pop culture? Since there's not a Japanese pop culture section, I guess this is the closest thing...
For me, it was when I was around 10 or 11. Ever since then, I've loved it. I don't have much anime anymore, but I have about 75 Japanese songs on my computer...
I know, I'm an amateur... |
| Well, Sailor Moon had me hooked before I was even in 1st grade, but I did not realize until the last couple of years when I discovered over half of my 2000 song 450 video media library was Jrock or anime related. Recently I have also started dressing very visual kei. I was about 6 when I started and now im 17 I know I am HOOKED with no way out lol. |
How much does a Japanese Boxer earn? I can't seem to find a decent page about Japanese Boxing and since I started watching Hajime no Ippo, I'm curious as to how much a Japanese Boxer earns from his matches. I heard that they box for peanuts. But compared to the U.S. how much could that be even for amateur boxers? |
| 1 - 5 thousand..?,Malaysia Ringgit.... |
Please help with my Japanese project - translations? I'm doing a BEGINNERS project on a 'celebrities biography'. Except some of this stuff escapes me.
In the examples, it says "うちわ、 ロサンゼルス です。” They're talking about Janet Jackson. I think 'uchi' means 'home' or something along those lines... so, Janet Jackson lives in Rosanzerusu? Ro..sanz...ers..? Please clarify!
Also, could some one please tell me the difference between ’はじめまして’、 ’こんにちは’、 & ’どうぞよろしく’? I know they're all different ways of saying 'hello' and 'pleased to meet you' and 'please take care of me' or something, but it's foggy.
Thank you, please excuse my blindingly amateur Japanese. |
ロサンゼルス: Los Angeles.
The dictionary I'm using ( www.jisho.org ) says that:
はじめまして: How do you do/Glad to meet you
こんにちは: Standard "hello", good day (daytime)
どうぞよろしく: Pleased to meet you
Don't worry about sucking at Japanese, I suck too :P You'll get better.

"In the abundance of sin, a winged creature rises to defend us from not only the fallen, but also from ourselves.
In the light she is shown as crimson, and in the night she is shown as raven.
Her mane is your signal
Her glare is your warning
Her silence is your demise
Her rose is your end
This angel is tainted." |
"罪の豊富さでは、翼のクリーチャーは自分自身からも、落ちてからだけでなく、私たち…
光で彼女は、真紅のように、夜、彼女はカラスとして示されている。
彼女のたてがみは、信号です
彼女のグレアは警告です
彼女の沈黙は、終焉です
エンドは、彼女のバラです
この天使が汚染されています。"
this is: "In the abundance of sin, a winged creature rises to defend us from not only the fallen, but also from ourselves.
In the light she is shown as crimson, and in the night she is shown as raven.

Her glare is your warning
Her silence is your demise

Do anime fests/conventions and such have karaoke performances? I'm looking for some public singing experience. Any ideas on where I could perform a Japanese song live (amateur level)? All I can think of are anime conventions.
The songs I sing are not anime songs though. They are other Japanese songs. Can you sing any Japanese song at an anime convention? |
| Most anime conventions will have some kind of karaoke competition, and generally it is JRock and JPop music that is used...not necessarily from an anime. If you go to a competition get the schedule first thing and find the time they have blocked out for karaoke. Get there early so you have a chance to browse what they have and find something you want to sing. |
Has anyone ever watched the Japanese sports entertainment obstacle course special called "SASUKE"? If so, what did you think?
In case it is televised under a different name in Europe and the U.S., Sasuke is maximum 4 stage knock-out competition for amateur athletes. Usually it never gets to the final round. The obstacle course is sadistically difficult and gruelling. 100 contestants can qualify for Stage 1; sometimes only 2 of them can advance to the next stage! Not only are the obstacles human-defying (spider walk for example) but there is a time limit too.
There is a version for women called Kunoichi, which focusses on balance and agility rather than strength and technique. And also special competitions for guys or the elderly.
I think there is something similar in the U.S. which they call Ninja Warrior, which is a bit easier than Sasuke.
Anyway, I'd be grateful for opinions ONLY from people who know what I'm talking about!
Thanks! |
I thought Ninja Warrior WAS Sasuke. It's on the G4 channel pretty much all the time.
I get muscle pain just watching that show. I love it....in America they would probably make it easier if not enough people won, but in Japan they only make it harder!
It's pretty scary that I started recognizing the competitors by name and face. I felt bad for that one dude who pretty much abandoned his family to compete in it, almost made it to the last stage, but fell off the final platform.
Funny thing is, the last stage seems relatively easy compared to stages 2+3......looks like just a massive endurance test(I say relatively easy.....Lord knows I could never compete in this show). |
